2-Point Projects
These projects projects require research, writing, and crafting. You must complete another project(s) worth a total of 2 points to receive full credit for the unit.
Shoe Box Diorama
Build a shoe box diorama of a daily life scene from ancient Egypt with labels. Make sure the details you include are true to the ancient Egyptian lifestyle. Write a one-page paper describing the scene.
Model of a House
Create a 3-dimensional model of an ancient Egyptian dwelling. Include furnishings and label each part of the house (living quarters, kitchen, etc). Write a one-page description of what the model represents, to include information on who would live in this type of housing, and where in the city the house would be located.
Egyptian Food
Research different types of ancient Egyptian food and choose one (or two) to make. You should bring enough samples of your food item(s) to share with your class during presentation day. Submit a written copy of the recipe and include a paragraph comparing the ingredients used and the preparation of the recipe now, to the preparation in Ancient Egypt.
Hairstyles in Egypt
Research the hairstyles of ancient Egyptian men, women, and children. Make a booklet with a drawing and a typed paragraph describing and explaining each of the hairstyles.You must have at least five (5) total.
Egyptian Clothing
Create a replica/reproduction of ancient Egyptian dress style. Choose the male (shendyt or kilt) or a female (tunic) costume. Include any adornments (jewelry, belts, headdresses, shoes, etc) to complete the outfit. Write a paper describing who wore this clothing and the time period during which the clothing was used.
Egyptian Jewelry
Research the different types of jewelry and adornments that the ancient Egyptians wore. Create display models of at least two (2) pieces of jewelry using clay, beads, stones, or any other materials available to you. Additionally, create a catalog of other pieces which include a graphic representation of each and a short description of what each piece is made of, who is the intended wearer, and its symbolic meaning (if any).
Draw a Pharaoh's Death Mask
Use newsprint or a similar type of paper to draw a life-size detailed copy of an Egyptian pharaoh's death mask. Write a paragraph explaining your choice of pharaoh, include important information (where the pharaoh was buried, how long and during which time period did her rule, etc), and describe any symbolism included on the mask.
"Once There Lived a Noble Ruler"
Research and write a one-page biography of one of the following Egyptian or Nubian rulers: Tutankhamen, Hatshepsut, Menes, Khufu, Akhenathen, Amenemenhet, Mentuhotep II, Ramses the Great, Kashta, or Ashurbanipal. Make sure to include the contributions of your ruler choice and illustrate your biography accordingly.
Hieroglyphics
Hand draw the basic hieroglyphic alphabet on a poster board. Translate an important passage of Egyptian history, a quote by a famous pharaoh or philosopher, or a poem/song written during ancient times. Make sure your information is accurate. Write a one-page paper explaining how hieroglyphics developed over time, what they were used for, who were the people who learned to write them, and any other interesting information.
Egyptian Scenery
Use your artistic abilities and a large piece of newsprint or poster board to draw and color one of Egypt's famous buildings or scene of life in Egypt. Write a one-page detailed description of the scene or building.
Egyptian Art
Study an Egyptian style of artwork: pottery, relief, painting, sculpture, etc. Create an original piece of artwork in this style. Write a paper describing your artwork, its significance, and the process/method used to make it.
Wall Painting in a Tomb
Paint a life-size mural showing activities from an Egyptian tomb, including hieroglyphic symbols. Click here for more details.
Pyramid Poster
This poster describes the history of pyramid building, and discusses the types of pyramids built for different pharaohs. The poster should contain original drawings and descriptions of each type of pyramid.
Build a working replica of a shaduf
A shaduf was used for lifting and transporting water to land using a simple lever. Click here for more information and links to websites that offer examples of how to make one. This project includes a written explanation of how the shaduf is made and how it works.
Egypt Map
Make a poster-sized map with the Nile River system, to include its source, tributaries, all six cataracts, delta, and the mouth. Label important cities (ancient and modern) and archaeological sites. Include a key for all symbols used, a map scale, a compass rose, and name all other bodies of water.
Timeline
Create a timeline of the most important events in Ancient Egyptian civilization. Your timeline must include pictures and should be larger than 8 ½ X 11” paper. You may choose to use several regular-sized pieces of paper glued together end-to-end.
Egyptian Game of Senet
Make an original Senet board and game pieces. Complete the project by including a written report describing the history of the game and detailed directions of how to play it. Learn to play the game and be prepared to teach your classmates how to play it.
Medical Book
Create a 5 to 10 page book showing the medical advances of the ancient Egyptians. Use graphics along with accurate information to show what the ancients knew about the human body, the types of ailments the people suffered from, and the types of treatments/medicines used to treat people. Include spells and rituals that you may find interesting. This book can be also made electronically in SmartNotebook format.
Social Structure
Create a representation of a social structure pyramid. You may use any format and materials that work for you. In addition to the pyramid, you must also complete a 1-page essay describing the social structure of ancient Egypt and whether or not there was room for a person to 'move' from one level of society to the next.
